Geography and History
Gouritsmond is a quiet seaside village situated at the mouth of the Gourits River on the Garden Route of the Western Cape province of South Africa. The Gourits River is the principal river in the Southern Cape. Gouritsmond is centrally situated between Cape Town and Knysna, making it an ideal base from which to visit many of the popular tourist attractions in the area.
Fishing is a very popular activity here and the fish are plentiful! Gouritsmond has some very famous fishing spots which are known as "The Fisheries", "Bull Point" and "KaapVacca". Here keen anglers will catch leervis, white steenbras, kob, gunter, and elf. The kabeljou will sometimes swim into the estuaries to feed on the mullet. The area is perfect for the powerboat fisherman and a launch ramp is available.
At Gouritsmond swimming is safe but the tide can sometimes be a bit dangerous, so visitors should be careful!
Gouritsmond is close to Mossel Bay, where visitors can go for their shopping at the big supermarkets and shopping malls.
Just over an hour's drive from Still Bay, Gouritsmond continues to be dominated by sheep and wheat farmers, as the town continues to function as a holiday spot, a popular beach, and place which to escape.
The Gouritsmond beach is ideal for swimming, surfing, sun bathing or just strolling to the river mouth. A few things of interest to look out for are the Fynbos, kiewiete (Cape plover) and the endangered black oyster catcher. For those who enjoy a good hike, there is a unique coastal walking trail from Mossel Bay (through Gourits) to Rein's Nature Reserve.
Camping is a popular form of accommodation in Gouritsmond. At the Gourits Rivier Mond (Gourits river-mouth) there is a caravan park, a camping site, and a hotel.
Other Accommodation options include: Self Catering Cottages, Houses and Bungalows to rent. In the village there is a supermarket, restaurant, pizza den, library, church, ATM, laundry, medical services, petrol station, etc.
