Best Boat Parties

While not common, boat parties are a wonderful way to spoil staff at the end of the year or celebrate an important event in a loved one’s life.

To be sure, there is an element of exclusivity to such occasions, as a healthy budget is usually required. However, since the aim of these soirees is to make lasting memories, saving up for months or even years in advance will be well worth the effort.

Waves lapping gently against the side of the boat as you enjoy the company of friends hardly needs selling, particularly since South Africa boasts some of the most picturesque coastlines in the world.

From the famous Knysna Heads to the magnificent Cape Town skyline, there are no better backdrops against which to unwind or revel with your nearest and dearest.

Boat charters, run by seasoned professionals who have completed yachtmaster offshore courses and other certified training programmes are very popular for these purposes. Knowing that your party is in the hands of professionals gives you tremendous peace-of-mind.

Although boat parties may not enjoy the space of indoor events, there is no shortage of things a host can do to make them memorable.

Dropping anchor to take in an idyllic setting or taking a sunset cruise is entirely up to you, such are the freedoms of a boat or yacht. While the last thing you would want is to place any restrictions on how you run your boat party, there are some guidelines that are worth keeping in mind.

  • Guest list: All party planning starts with who you are going to invite, but on a boat this becomes so much more important. Numerically, it stands to reason that space is limited, so you can’t exactly invite the whole world. Another consideration is whether people suffer from sea sickness. Not everyone will have their sea legs, so it’s best to scratch them from the list if you think they might spend the entire outing in the bathroom.
  • Time of year: If you are going to charter a boat, bear in mind that prices vary according to the seasons. You can expect to pay much higher – even double or triple – in the warm summer months, so maybe look at spring of the end of summer to host the event. Booking well in advance can also save precious rands, which can then be spent on food and other amenities for the party.
  • Theme: Getting out on the water should be reward enough for most people, but remember that a boat party is not an everyday event, so you should get the most out of it. Themes are always fun, and given the setting, pirate or beach-themed parties will go down a treat with guests.
