The North West province of South Africa is bordered by Botswana in the north and by the Kalahari desert in the west, Gauteng to the east, and the Free State to the south.
Mahikeng is the capital city of the North West and is historically known for the Maļ¬keng Siege (1899) during the Anglo-Boer/South African War. Potchefstroom, Klerksdorp, Rustenburg and Brits are the economic hubs of the North West. Tourists are attracted to this province for its game reserves, national park and the world-famous Sun City.
Rustenburg and Brits produce over 90% of South Africa’s platinum, earning the North West its nickname of being the “platinum province”. The North West produces a quarter of South Africa's gold along with granite and diamonds.

Sun City is one of the world's biggest entertainment centres - a whole city on its own. Another of the province's popular attractions is Hartbeespoort Dam, located in the heart of the Magaliesburg, this area is known for its fun times and leisure activities. Madikwe Game Reserve is one of South Africa's prime safari destinations with the park home to over 60 large mammal species and includes the Big Five. The endangered Wild Dog can be found at this reserve which is also famous for its African Wild Dog research. A perfect holiday for birdwatchers, Madikwe has approximately 300 resident and migrant bird species.
