Pilanesberg is a National Park is situated in the North West Province of South Africa.
Lying in an extinct volcano, Pilanesberg is one of the largest volcanic centres of its kind in the world, which consists of rare rock forms and structures. The area is ringed by three hills and is known as the "Pilanesberg National Park Alkaline Ring Complex".
The ancient Pilanesberg National Park ranks high in the world as an exceptional geological phenomena. There are a number of stone and iron age sites scattered throughout the park, which has survived through ages of erosion.
The park is located between the Kalahari and the Lowveld, and unlike other larger parks the overlap of the arid Kalahari and wetter Lowveld vegetation brings forth a unique mixture of mammals and birds. Springbok, brown hyena, the red eyed bulbul, and camel thorn trees normally located in solely arid regions are found living amongst impala, black eyed bulbul and Cape chestnut trees more commonly found in wetter regions. The mixture of hues, habitats and views are a photographers delight.
In the centre of Pilanesberg, is a lake, Mankwe Dam, which is the largest body of water in the park. The lake is filled with crocodiles and hippos, and along with the Big Five, the national park has practically every mammal found in South Africa.
There are over 300 recorded species of birds in the park, of which some are migrants and others permanent inhabitants. There are six bird hides situated around the park which make excellent viewing potential.
