The Gauteng section of the Vaal Dam is situated approximately 77km south of Johannesburg. South Africa’s second largest dam by area and the fourth largest by volume, the Vaal Dam is a very big area of water indeed. The dam extends over three provinces namely Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Free State, and is a firm favourite for weekend getaways and water sport enthusiasts.
The Vaal River at approximately 1,120km long, is the largest tributary of the Orange River and has its source in the Mpumalanga province. The Vaal Dam provides some of the country’s cleanest water which is received from the Lesotho Highlands Water Project via the Wilge River. Water from the Vaal is used for the industrial requirements of the Greater Johannesburg Metro area as well as a large section of the Free State.
