General Information

The Berea overlooks the city of Durban on the northern side with some of the oldest mansions in the city situated here.  Once known to be one of the most expensive areas to live in, many of the old houses have now been converted into office blocks and upmarket apartment buildings.  The two main areas of Berea are Musgrave and Glenwood which are separated by the N3 national freeway which leads into Durban.

Berea is a trendy mix of African, Indian and European cultures with its pavement restaurants and classy bars.  Florida Road is one of the most popular streets which is a hive of activity all year-round – colourful and buzzing with coffee shops, restaurants with live bands and sports bars.

Accommodation

A perfect area to use as a base when visiting Durban - out of the hustle and bustle of the city and yet close enough to travel in and out.  Berea has a large amount of bed and breakfast establishments, guest houses and lodges to choose from.  The accommodation directory provides a list of advertisers.

Activities

The Berea is a lovely quiet and leafy area, which is great for family walks.  Some of the things to see and do in and around Berea are as follows:

  • Botanic Gardens – beautiful gardens with a tea garden
  • Mitchell Park - ducks, birds and tortoises are the main attraction with picnic areas
  • African Art Centre

The activities directory provides more information on things to do.

Businesses

Berea has some good shopping centres and markets.  The Musgrave Shopping Centre and the Berea Centre are two of the most well-known.  The business directory provides a list of advertised businesses or add your own free listing.
