Geography and History

Prince Albert is situated in the Great Karoo in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.  Just 72km from Oudtshoorn over the majestic Swartberg Mountains, or 88km through the awe-inspiring route of Meringspoort and the beautiful Prince Albert Valley.    Prince Albert is a delightful South African village in the Karoo.  Although situated in an arid region, Prince Albert is blessed with water from the Swartberg Mountains and the village is a little oasis.  The town celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2012.

Activities

Cloaked in the peace and serenity of another age, Prince Albert is the ideal place to throw off the stresses of modern life. You can relax under the vast blue skies, ponder the crystal clear stars at night, breathe the fresh mountain air while cool water from the Swartberg mountains gurgles down the little canals on every street.

Admire the 13 national monuments and sometimes funky Karoo-style homes, enjoy our art galleries, good Karoo food and hospitality…

Wine, olives, figs, good food and an undying interest in cultural history have put Prince Albert on the map. This beautiful little town is different from others in the Central Karoo, but it offers the same warm welcome.

Prince Albert has its own style, starting from a unique gable designed for his beloved daughter by Carel Lotz to the sophistication with which it handles its annual Olive Festival.

The more adventurous activities include a cycling down the steep gradients of the Swartberg Pass! Also, the Gordon Koppie Trail is great for walking.

Go for a  hike in the mountains, learn about our amazing geology, look for special Karoo plants and succulents, tour our fruit farms, taste award-winning local wines, cheeses and olives, visit the superb art gallery and museum, explore the weaver and arts & crafts shops which stock mohair garments, enjoy a guided historical or ghost walk through the village and take a tour of the celestial splendor of our night skies…

Prince Albert loves tourists! The town thrives on entertaining them! It’s all here. Come and enjoy the best kept secret in the Karoo!
