General Information

The little town of De Kelders, is located in the Overberg region of the Western Cape, and lies just 5 km North of Gansbaai, about 25 minutes’ drive from Hermanus. This little town has managed to stay a small time little village and has not as yet given in to the large scale tourism that envelopes this part of the country. It is still essentially a fishing village and is famous for its seafood.

De Kelders has a variety of accommodation options available from Guest Houses, Bed and Breakfasts to Self-catering units.

Activities

Explore the caves in De Kelders. Hike along the coast and walk along the sandy white beaches of Franskraal and Pearly Beach. Visit the annual Crayfish Festival over Easter. Abalone (Perlemoen) is professionally farmed in the Dangerpoint area. The Gansbaai Festival takes place annually in July in the Gansbaai harbour and the Winter Fynbos show is a great attraction not to be missed.

De Kelders lies on the shores of Walker Bay - renowned as the home of the Southern Right Whale. Some of the best land-based whale watching in the world is the major attraction of De Kelders and whales come to within metres of the rocks that line the edges of kelp beds along the De Kelders coastline.

The De Kelders cave is the only freshwater cave next to the coast of Africa, which has been changed into a swimming place. There are many restaurants on offer to suit every visitors budget - seafood is the speciality.

De Kelders has a thriving business community and provides a good range of products and services to its residents as well as surrounding communities.
