General Information on Franschhoek

Franschhoek is situated in the Cape Winelands region of the Western Cape. The Franschhoek Valley, known as the “French Corner” of the Cape, is one of the most scenic and charming areas of the Western Cape.

Spectacular vineyards cover these mountain slopes settled more than 300 years ago by the Huguenots, who brought with them their age-old French wine and food culture. This is a valley rich in history centred around a picturesque village of friendly, welcoming people.  Read the interesting article as to Franschhoek being the Best Holiday Destination in South Africa in our article section.

Originally known as the Valley of the Huguenots because, after fleeing their homeland when Protestantism was outlawed in France in 1685, a community of French Huguenots were granted land in this valley by the Dutch government of the Cape. Today many of the wine farms still bear their original French names and most of these farms have beautiful examples of Cape Dutch architecture.

Bringing great food and wine together in one town, there are many fantastic restaurants, famous wine cellars, and with over a hundred places to stay and galleries & shops to satisfy every taste - Franschhoek is a great family holiday experience.

Franschhoek is a wine lovers delight.  In the town center you will find wonderful crafts, art and antique shops and galleries. The main street is lined with coffee shops and restaurants.  There are a number of walking trails in the surrounding mountains for the more energetic traveller.

Some excellent events are listing in the events section including the annual Uncorked Festival.

The town has a thriving business community and provides a wide range of goods and services to its residents as well as surrounding communities. See our business directory for a list of businesses in Franschhoek or add your own free business listing.
