General Information on Graafwater
Graafwater is a town in the Sandveld situated in the West Coast region of the Western Cape. This town situated 300 km from Cape Town, about halfway between Clanwilliam and Lamberts Bay. Graafwater is the Afrikaans term for "water from a spade" referring to the Afrikaans farming culture in 1910 when the town was established.
Cape Governor Hendrik Swellengrebel passed this way in 1737 and later wrote an account of this shelter. He mentioned a wild fig tree growing out of a cleft at the back of the cave and it can still be found to this day. This cave has been declared a national monument.
Graafwater has a good variety of accommodation options available from Guest Houses, Bed and Breakfasts to Self-catering units. Wild-flowers bloom in the area from late July to September.
Activities to do in and around this area includes bird watching and hiking. Graafwater has a thriving little business community mostly geared towards the tourism industry.
