Winterton
General Information
At the main access point to central Drakensberg is where Winterton is found, and is located in what can only be called stunning foothills. Three years after the Anglo-Boer War, 1905 - the colonial government constructed a weir across the Little Thukela River and founded an irrigation settlement here called Springfield, which was then renamed Winterton in 1910..
Cahkin peak, a magnificent, sheer faced and flat-topped block, has plenty accommodation facilities, and is also known as Mdedelelo Wilderness, (he who cannot be overcome). The Drakensberg peaks, Champagne, Cathedral and Cathkin peaks, offer hiking trails, trout and bass fishing, San rock art, horse riding and hang-gliding .
Most of the caves within the Mdedelelo Wilderness Area are rather inaccessible or overexposed to weather extremes, but KZN Wildlife's campsite at Monk's Cowl is conveniently situated and privately-run establishments are in great abundance.
The annual street carnival which is in July, gives Winterton the opportunity to host local artists, crafters, musicians and companies that form part of the the tourist industry to congregate on the main street, which is closed for the day, to showcase the town.
