General Information

Jozini is the entrance point for the Northern Elephant Coast area or Northern Maputaland and is a small business centre situated close to the impressive Pongolapoort Dam, better known as the Jozini Dam.

The Jozini dam is designed to irrigate more than 80 000 hectares of agricultural land, supporting products such as sugar cane, rice, coffee, fibre crops and various sub-tropical fruits.

The water for the Jozini Dam comes from the Pongolo River, which means 'trough' and is the principal river of Maputaland. The river has long, deep pools with steep sides and is an essential lifeline for the area it serves. Supporting a massive population of fish, crocodiles and hippos, as well as the people of the area, it is an integral part of the economy of the region, and is very popular as a Tiger fishing destination where you can also view wildlife from your boat and the glow-flies that light up the early evening shoreline, transforming the water into an luminesce. The shores are filled with buffalo, wildebeest, giraffe, zebra, kudu, bushbuck, duiker, steenbok, hyena, cheetah, wild dog, cerval cat, warthog and even the occasional leopard can be seen. Other activities which one can partake in include game drives, water sports, relaxing in the sun, and horse riding around the surrounding game and nature reserves at Lake Jozini.

There is many other sights one can visit that is cultural, natural and historical, among them Dingaan’s Grave and Border Cave (Historical), Lebombo Mountains, Mkuze and Ndumo Game Reserve, Hlathikhulu Forest and Usuthu Gorge (Natural) and Jozini Bridge as a man-made attraction.
