Thukela Mouth
General Information
Four kilometres off the N2, on the northern bank of the mighty river, nestles the village of Thukela Mouth. Thukela Mouth hosts major fishing tournaments and the annual Thukela Raft Race. It is a wonderland of walks, fishing, spectacular birdlife, indigenous forest, water sports and endless beaches. Thukela Mouth has affordable accommodation options. Thukela Mouth's warm coastal waters support a variety of fish and shellfish, whales and dolphins are present all year round. Events associated with the river have left a legacy of major historical and cultural sites in its vicinity.
The Thukela Waterfall which has a series of 5 cascades, and was named by the Zulus, “Thukela” or “tugela” means “the startling one, which has an uphill hike through the gorge of the same name.
On its southern bank lies the Harold Johnson Nature Reserve, where more than 200 bird species have been recorded and game viewing is at its best. with a number of hiking trails where you can see zebras, mongooses, monkeys and a variety of antelope roaming freely in their natural habitat.
