Geography and history

Koffiefontein is a small farming town in the Motheo and Xhariep region of the Free State Province, South Africa. The name is Afrikaans and means “coffee fountain”. Koffiefontein was a stopover in the 1800's for transport riders travelling between the coast, the diamond fields and gold mines. "Coffee fountain" is a reference to the strong coffee brew. The riders made this coffee during their stopover at this very spot.

The discovery of diamonds in 1870 saw the town quickly develop as prospectors began to mine the vicinity in search of high class diamonds. Today, the region focuses on cattle and sheep farming. The main crops sown are lucerne, potatoes and ground nuts.

Koffiefontein is best known for its coffee and diamonds. But this attractive town is also the home of Etienne Le Roux, a famous Afrikaans novelist whose homestead and grave can be visited.
