Clocolan
Geography and history
Clocolan is a small town located in the Thabo Mofutsanyana region of the Free State Province in South Africa. The ancient Kwena people first inhabited these lands and the Basotho people followed. In the early 1800s the Basotho were driven out by looters and brigands who mispronounced the original name of the area, Hlohlowane. This name means “ridge of the battle”, but the invaders could not pronounce it and named the area Clocolan. It has a population of around 2 000 residents who mainly speak Afrikaans and Sotho.
