Vredefort
Geography and history
Vredefort is a small farming town situated in the Northern Free State of the Free State Province, South Africa. Its name is Afrikaans and translates into “Fort of Peace”. This name was derived from the peaceful conclusion of an almost-war between the Orange Free State and the Transvaal. Vredefort was laid out in 1876 on the third largest meteorite site in the world. The dome stretches over 42km. The mixed-farming industry of this region produces cattle, sorghum, sunflowers, groundnuts and maize.Situated 120km south west of Johannesburg. Leopards still roam in the hills of the Vredefort Dome.

Activities and attractions
Vredefort offers many interesting activities and sights for those who are visiting the town. The Vredefort Dome is a very popular tourist attraction because it is the oldest meteorite impact site in the world. The meteorite was 10km in diameter and the original crater was approximately 300km in diameter.
