Strydenburg
Geography and History
Strydenburg is your typical semi-desert town in the Karoo in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. Quiet, peaceful and full of character, it is the ideal stop over for travellers as it is halfway between Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Strydenburg (‘the town of strife’) received it’s rather doleful name on account of incessant squabbling over – of all things – the choice of name.
The town is situated at the edge of a large pan, filled with shallow salty water during rainy years. Strydenburg was laid out by the Dutch Reformed Church in 1892 on the farm Roodedam. The well known Afrikaans author, FA Venter, was born and spent a great deal of his life in the district of Strydenburg. The town boasts well maintained remnants of Karoo style houses. The local guest houses and museum are fine examples of these Karoo ‘tuishuise’.
Activities
Strydenburg offers you a complete relaxation time away from the city life. There are hiking trails nearby and the visitors enjoy canoeing and river rafting on the Orange River not far from Strydenburg.
You can also enjoy the views and beautiful scenery on horseback trails where you will get to see some of the most amazing sunsets ever and the night skies offer a spectacular view of the stars.
