Geography and History

Groblershoop is a small town in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. Groblershoop was founded in 1936 and named after a former Minister of Agriculture. Groblershoop is the gateway to the Green Kalahari. This is the farming and administrative centre in the Orange River Valley, east of Upington.

The Groblershoop area is a major wine producing area. The Oranjerivier Wine Cellars are just outside of the town and they are the first on the Orange River Wine route. Oranjerivier Wine Cellars is the largest co-operative cellars in Africa and the second largest in the world.

Activities

Groblershoop has a rich cultural heritage, beauty as well as a thriving community and economy. Vistors are invited to come and experience their large delicious grapes and fantastic wines or visit one of the many cultural and historical sites.

Boegoeberg Dam - Completed in 1931, surrounded by the Kalahari’s red dunes and countless kokerbome (quiver trees), the dam is a watersports and anglers’ Mecca. Tel 083 257 4730

Eselkloupan - Fossilised track resembling donkey spoor. Viewing is by appointment only.

Orange River Wine Cellars - Co-operative Indulge in wine tasting before a tour. Tel: 054 833 0147.

Roaring Sands - White dunes surrounded by typically red Kalahari dunes, ‘roar’ when the wind blows. Sand curios for sale. Tel: 053 313 1061/2.

Water Turbine - On the farm Winstead, you can inspect a water turbine driven by solid-oak gears imported from England in 1910
