Hotazel
Geography and History
Hotazel is a small town in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. Hotazel is home to Samancor’s Mamatwan open-quarry manganese ore mine and sinter plant, and Wessels underground manganese ore mine and railway terminus.
Hotazel serves the manganese mines, 147km north of Postmasburg and 46km north-west of Kuruman. Hotazel gets its name from the farm on which it was laid out - a pun on ‘hot as hell’, referring to the weather when the farm was surveyed.
Activities
Hotazel activities include a swimming pool to take the sting out of its onomatopoeic name, a mashie golf course and squash and tennis courts. Social activities revolve around the recreation club.
