Hogsback is a little piece of paradise situated high up on the Amathole Mountains of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Hogsback is surrounded by centuries-old indigenous Afro-montane forests.
Hogsback got its name from nearby mountain peaks which resemble the bristles of a hog’s back. Hogsback is also known by its Xhosa name Qabimbola, which means “Red Clay On The Face”, which is used during initiation rites.
Hogsback is well known for its beautiful spring, summer and autumn gardens. In winter, Hogsback is often blanketed with snow, ant that’s when it’s time to kick back and cozy up in front of a roaring log fire or to take a brisk walk in the clear, bracing air.
Towns close to Hogsback include Whittlesea, Cathcart, Stutterheim and Alice.
It is the ideal holiday destination for nature lover. Hogsback offers the ultimate break-away from the rush of city life – a dramatic natural beauty, lots of nature-based activities, and above all, silence and tranquility.
You can enjoy biding, trout fishing, rock climbing, swimming, abseiling, mountain biking, horse riding and a 4x4 route through indigenous forest. Or take a trip to one of the nearby game parks to round off a day’s exploring.
Visit the Ecology Shrine, follow marded hiking trails, marvel at beautiful gardens, do the Tolkien trail, meet local artists and crafts people, challenge your inner self at South Africa’s largest labyrinth or relax and rejuvenate in the capable hands of the various complementary health therapists who practice their healing arts in the peaceful, countryside atmosphere.
Annual events include X-mas in July, the Hogsback Festival (September) and the Hobbiton Mountain Bike Race.
