Geography and History

King William's Town is a charming town that has recently been incorporated into the Buffalo City Metro pole of the Eastern Cape province in South Africa.   King William’s Town is situated on the upper reaches of the Buffalo River and the town is a fascinating mixture of history, culture and landscape. From King William's town the N2 leads to one of the South Africa's most pleasant holiday cities, namely East London.

Cultural history is preserved in the town’s museums, monuments and many sandstone buildings - including the Steve Biko Garden of Remembrance, the Bisho Massacre Monument, the Amathole Museum (a Xhosa gallery, German settlers, military local history and mammal displays) and a Missionary Museum.

Activities

There are a number of hiking trails in the area - the 2 day Kologha Hiking Trail, the 2 day Pirie Section of the Amatola Hiking Trail (in total, the Amatola Trail covers 105km over 5 days), as well as shorter walks to suit the whole family.

Trout and bass fishing at the Maden and Rooikrantz dams are popular amongst fishermen.

Other activities include water sports, go-cart racing, bowls, soccer, rugby, cricket, hockey, squash and tennis.

An annual highlight is the Dale-Selbourne Rugby and Hockey Challenge - played in May.

King William's Town lies within a short drive of the many malaria free game reserves of the Eastern Cape.
