Geography and History

Molteno is a town in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.   Molteno was founded in 1874 and named after Sir John Molteno, the first prime minister of the Cape Colony.  South Africa's first coal mine was opened here.  Molteno is situated high in the Stormberg Mountains, and is known to be South Africa's coldest town and it is close to the country's only ski resort - Tiffendel.  An interesting fact is that Ouma Rusks originated here!

Molteno, lies north west of Hofmeyr, roughly 13 kilometres from the town of Stormberg - where the famous Battle of Stormberg was fought in December 1899 - and not far off the N6 in the heart of the Stormberg Mountain range.

Activities

Molteno is near the country's only ski resort, Tiffendal.  Molteno reaches record winter temperatures promising the excitement of snow!

Visit the San rock art site on the farm, King’s Glen, 5 km off the main tarred road from Molteno to Sterkstroom. This site, only recently discovered, lies well concealed within a cave on the farm.

San Rock Art and Fossils: The area is also rich in fossil finds and stone age implements uncovered in caves and diggings close to Molteno. Three extinct volcanoes in the vicinity add to the suggestion that perhaps this little unheard of town is worth more than just a cursory glance.

The Molteno museum is housed in the sandstone library building. Its exhibits cover local European cultural history, a history of the area’s indigenous people and a selection of daguerreotypes of the town (photographs produced through one of the earliest photographic processes known).

Agriculture, and specifically sheep farming, is now Molteno's primary economy.
