Benoni
General Information
The city of Benoni is situated in the East Rand and is more suburban with its tree lined suburbs than most East Rand towns. Benoni is situated in the Gauteng Province in South Africa.
In 1907 the Benoni Race Track was opened. The track was disproportionately large compared to the small gold mining town in which it was situated. The first horse race was held on Saturday 7 December of that year and a mounted gold whip was awarded to the winning jockey and a gold medal to the winning horse’s owner. The horse riding tradition still remains in the town and today Benoni contains more horse stables per square kilometre than anywhere else in the Southern Hemisphere.
Activties and Attractions
The city contains more than two dozen separate suburbs and is now focused more on industry and services rather than mining as it once was. A number of activities are available in Benoni which include the local museum, a bunny park containing hundreds of rabbits, cinemas and shopping centres and Willowmore park, a provincial and One Day International Cricket venue.
Other things to do in Benoni are:
-
Acapilia Laser Clinic and Day Spa
-
Glass art at The Crucible
-
Johannesburg Bunny Park
