General Information

The city of Germiston is located in the east rand of Gauteng just east of Johannesburg and to the west of Benoni. The city grew from a farm on which two farmers struck gold on a farm in the area during the gold rush. The Rand Refinery was opened in Germiston in 1921, one of the world’s largest refineries, also in Germiston is South Africa’s busiest civil airport, Rand Airport.

Germiston is South Africa's sixth largest city and has immense industrial significance. Seventy percent of the Western World's gold passes through its 100-year-old gold refinery, the world's largest.

Germiston boasts a number of beautiful historic buildings such as St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, St Boniface’s Church and The Alexander Hotel.

Activities and Attractions

Another attraction in Germiston is Victoria Lake, otherwise known as Germiston Lake. The lake is host to the Victoria lake club which is home to some of the best canoeists and rowing crews in the country. It includes the sixteen time South African School Champions, St Benedict's College. The Germiston Lake is a very popular spot on weekends for the water skiing enthusiasts and regattas.
