Nigel
General Information
The small town of Nigel is located on the edge of the East Rand in Gauteng in South Africa. The town’s economic activities are focused mainly on mining and heavy industry.
The town was established in 1882 when a prospector discovered gold on the farm Varkensfontein and formed the Nigel Gold Mining Company, named so because the prospector was reading Sir Walter Scott’s The Fortunes of Nigel at the time.
Today Nigel is an importent livestock farming and manufacturing town whose streets still bear names derived from Sir Walter Scott's book - 'The Fortunes of Nigel'.
