General Information

Vereeniging gets its name from the Dutch word meaning “association” or “union” and was established in 1892 on the banks of the Vaal River where it grew steadily thanks to nearby coal mines in the area.

Founded in 1892 on the banks of northernmost loop of the Vaal River, it is one of the bussiest industrial areas in the country, manufacturing cables, chains, steel tubing, farm implements and other products, as well as refractory bricks. The Electricity Supply Comission (ESKOM) runs several thermal power stations in the area, where coal reserves have been estimated at 4 billion tons. Apart from coal, deposits of fire-clay, silica and building stone are mined.

Today Vereeniging is one of the most important industrial manufacturing centres in South Africa, producing iron, steel, pipes, bricks, tiles and processed lime. The town’s motto is “Per Pacem Ad Industriam” which is Latin for “Through peace to industry”.

Despite its industrial focus, thanks to its location on the Vaal River the city has a bustling tourism industry with the Riviera on Vaal Hotel and Country Club being one of the area’s most popular tourism spots. Many wealthy South African’s own or rent holiday homes along the Vaal River as well.
