Modimolle (Nylstroom)
General Information
Modimolle, originally named Nylstroom, is situated in the Waterberg region of the Limpopo Province in South Africa. Modimolle is located approximately 135km north of Pretoria.
The name Nylstroom comes from when a group of Voortrekkers came upon a hill and river which resembled a pyramid. Believing they had arrived in Egypt, they thought the river was the Nile (Nyl) River and promptly named their settlement Nylstroom (Nile stream). The new name of Modimolle means 'the spirits have eaten' relating to the tradition of the local tribesman offering food to the ancestors.
This town is the commercial centre for the region and is a beautiful tourist destination. Grapes, soft fruits, peanuts and maize are all grown here.
The Nyl floodplain and Nylsvley Nature Reserve is a must-see for tourists. This vast wetland is situated between Modimolle and Mookgophong and is home to the largest collection of water birds in the southern hemisphere. The reserve is open to day visitors as well as campers.
There is a wide variety of accommodation options in Modimolle from game lodges, guest houses to self-catering units. There is a great selection of restaurants that cater for all tastes and budgets.
