Groot Marico is a town located in the Central Region of the North West Province in South Africa. It is situated in the heart of a mixed farming district and has become synonymous with the mythological writings of Herman Charles Bosman. This town was proclaimed in 1948 which started as a Voortrekker settlement in the 1850s.
Bosman has this to say about the area: “There is no other place I know that is so heavy with atmosphere, so strangely and darkly impregnated with that stuff of life that bears the authentic stamp of South Africa”. Groot Marico relies heavily on agriculture, mining and tourism. The rustic town of Groot-Marico is a typical North West town, brimming with historical charm and atmosphere. This is also the land of mampoer, a breathtaking strong spirit distilled from fruit. It is situated in the newly named DR NGAKA MODIRI MOLEMA DISTRICT.
