Geography and history

Zeerust, including Lehurutshe, is a town situated in the Central Region of the North West Province in South Africa. This beautiful town was founded in 1867 in the lush greens of the Klein Marico River Valley. Diederik Coetzee finished building the church around which this town was formed. He named it after his late brother, Casper Coetzee, who never saw the completion. The area was named Coetzee-Rust which means “Coetzee’s rest”. The abbreviated form is the town’s current name, Zeerust.

Mixed farming forms part of the town’s agricultural industry. Lead and chrome mining, on the other hand, forms part of the town’s economic industry. The tall grasses and magnificent trees in the area make this town an archetypal Bushveld town.
