Geography and history

Taung is an internationally recognised town situated in the Bophirima region of the North West Province in South Africa. This picturesque town shot to fame when a crucial link in the scientific ascent of man was found. The Taung Skull was dug up in the nearby Buxton quarries in 1924. Taung is named after Tau, the chief of the Legoya or Bataung people and the town’s name means “place of the lion”.

The Taung Child Skull was found at fossil sites in caves formed by gigantic tufa flow coming off the dolomite bedrock. The community of Taung consists of about 20 000 residents.
