Klerksdorp, including Stilfontein, Hartbeesfontein and Orkney, is a city located in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda region of the North West Province, South Africa. This city was established in 1837 on the banks of the Schoonspruit. Klerksdorp was founded by Voortrekkers and named after Jacob de Clerq. Many prospectors descended on Klerksdorp in 1886 after the discovery of gold in the area. Klerksdorp is also known as Klerksdorp (Matlosane).
Today this city’s economy is thriving thanks to its mining and agricultural industry. The city’s population is approximately 60 000 inhabitants and the majority of them speak Afrikaans. Klerksdorp is an important producer of maize, sorghum, groundnuts and sunflower.

Klerksdorp and its surrounding towns have loads of activities and attractions for all to enjoy. About 4 km off the N12 national road, tourists will find the Birth Site of Archbishop Desmond Tutu. This is certainly a must when visiting this city.
