Geography and history

Wolmaransstad is a mining town situated in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda region of the North West Province, South Africa. It was officially proclaimed a village in 1891. The town is named after JMA Wolmarans, a member of the executive council of the Transvaal Republic and is located in the picturesque Makwassie Valley. Wolmaransstad is a diamond mining town and relies on this industry for its thriving economy. Wolmaransstad lies in the valley of the Makwassie Stream, which takes its name from the many wild spearmint bushes that grow along its banks

The town is located on the N12 national road between Johannesburg and Kimberley. The agricultural industry of this town is also an important producer of maize crops. Wolmaransstad has a total population of about 3 000 inhabitants.
