Ga-Rankuwa
Geography and history
Ga-Rankuwa, including Jericho and Mabopane, is a township situated in the Bojanala region of the North West Province in South Africa. It is located just 37 km from Pretoria in the Gauteng Province. In the 1960s black citizens were forced to leave the suburb of Lady Selborne and move to the townships of Mamelodi, Atteridgeville and Ga-Rankuwa.
The name of this township is derived from the word “Nku” which means “sheep” and this perfectly describes the manner in which its inhabitants were forced to relocate. Today, Ga-Rankuwa is a centre for fertile grounds and rich history.
