Geography and history

Koster, including Derby, is a farming town located in the Bojanala region of the North West Province in South Africa. This town was proclaimed in 1913 and named after the Dutch owner of the farm it was laid out on, Bastiaan Koster. Conveniently situated between the Limpopo and Orange Rivers, Koster enjoys the water supply that supports its mixed farming activities.

Derby, situated near Koster, is named after the British Secretary of State Lord Derby and served as the battle grounds for the Anglo-Boer War between the Boers and a Scottish Cavalry Regiment.
