Geography and history

Kroondal is a town situated in the Bojanala region of the North West Province in South Africa. The town began as a Lutheran mission station in 1858. It was founded on a farm named Kronendal which means “crown dale”. The area was divided up into plots for farmers where other missionaries could also set up house in order to use the station.

This led to the town having mostly German-speaking residents and the architecture is distinctly Teutonic. Kroondal is located on the N4 national road and its total population stands at about 4 000 inhabitants.
