Geography and history

Swartruggens is a small farming town located in the Bojanala region of the North West Province in South Africa. This tranquil town situated in archetype Bushveld countryside was founded on a farm named Brakfontein in 1875. It started as a village and although it has grown into a beautiful small town, it still functions as a village. The name Swartruggens means “black spines” which perfectly describes the nature of the typography in which the town is located.

Swartruggens is located near the Elands River and situated 34 km from Koster. It has a total population of approximately 2 000 residents and the majority of them speak Afrikaans.The name "Swartruggens" refers to the series of black ridges (hills) that surround the town.
